Collection: About the Artist

Pushing the boundaries of moss art.

James Ammann is the artist behind the work at Moss Art Installations. Based in San Diego and backed by over 20 years of hands-on craftsmanship, James brings a sculptural, design-forward approach to preserved moss; transforming natural materials into modern, living statements.

Inspired by untouched forests, flowing water, and the quiet elegance of the natural world, each piece is built in-house using preserved moss, exotic wood, stone, and sand. The result: refined works that bring calm, texture, and intention to interior spaces.

His creative path began as a young boy on his grandfather’s workbench, building half pipes and skate ramps from scratch. By high school, he found his way into woodshop classes, where his curiosity deepened into discipline. There, he began crafting furniture, coffee tables, bookshelves, chairs, and learned to spray finishes, apply stains, and appreciate the grain and character of exotic woods. As his skills grew, so did his design language; expanding to include the bold contrast of concrete and wood, hand-poured resin inlays, and custom-built desks with a modern edge.

Each chapter built upon the last, from skateboard ramps to sculptural moss art, shaping James into the designer he is today: one who honors raw materials, embraces innovation, and never stops evolving. James is recognized not only as a skilled maker, but as a visionary designer redefining the boundaries of organic art.

His approach is meticulous. His materials are honest. And his art speaks in the language of nature, bold, powerful, and alive with meaning.
